America currently generates approximately 20% of its electricity from nuclear power. This compares to 76% in France, 28% in Germany, and 26% in Japan. Energy experts view nuclear power as a low cost and environmentally friendly way to make electricity without emitting noxious carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In response to the growing appeal of nuclear power, the Department of Energy has approved $18.5 billion in federal govt. loan guarantees for construction of new nuclear reactors in South Carolina, Texas, Maryland, and and Georgia. Beginning in 2011, the new construction is certain to help America’s hurting manufacturing sector. The power plants will be built by four utilities: NRG Energy Inc., Unistar, Scana, and Southern. Do you think nuclear has a chance to surpass coal, gas, solar, and wind as America’s preferred source of energy?
